Letter to a new mom
Sweet beautifully created momma,
Congratulations on the precious little one growing in your womb. God has chosen you to be this baby’s mother. And as scary as that may sound, you were created for a time such as this. God knew you would conceive, carry and birth this baby. It is all part of His plan for your life as a woman of God. He knew your baby was nestled in the wall of your womb before you even knew of his existence. God knows the color of your babies’ eyes and hair, the shape of his nose, his first word, and even the size of his feet at 16 years old. For God says, “even the hairs of your head are all numbered.” Luke 12:7 Isn’t that amazing!

Let me tell you a little bit about what is happening in the safe, quiet space of your womb. From the moment of conception, your little one was growing as your baby’s cells divided to form the cells that will grow into your baby’s nervous system, circulatory system, heart and brain. By 10 weeks gestation, your baby is structurally complete. Just as God says in Psalm 139:13 “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.” Your baby is growing 1 millimeter a day. At 3 months gestation, your baby is already practicing for life outside your womb. Your baby is sucking its thumb, swallowing amniotic fluid and urinating tiny drops of urine into the amniotic fluid.

While your baby is busy growing, your body is changing and growing too. This will explain why you are so tired. In addition to growing another life, your body is growing another organ. The placenta is the only organ that forms after a woman is born. It is fully formed by the twelfth week of pregnancy. The placenta will produce hormones for you and it will exchange nutrients and waste products for your baby. Your breasts will have a feeling of fullness and tenderness as they prepare to produce milk.

Those are some of the physical changes happening. There are also emotional and mental changes due to the surge of hormones your body is creating. You may have noticed some mood swings, found yourself crying over the commercials during your favorite show or felt overwhelmed as you contemplated the kind of mother you want to be. Take comfort in knowing you are not alone. The Creator is here with you. Take comfort in His promises. “Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6.

I encourage you to take time each day and sit quietly talking to your baby and sharing with God your joys, worries, and concerns. Close your eyes, notice your breaths, your belly, your own heartbeat, your little one’s kicks. When you find yourself afraid or anxious, read this verse out loud. “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6,7. And this one. “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13. One more verse “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10. These verses are lifesavers for me. I hope they will bring you comfort, strength and peace too.
